A wheel bearing is set of steel balls enclosed by a metal ring. It is positioned on a metal axle shaft within the hub. The wheel hub is the mounting assembly at the centre of each wheel. Tips for operating wheel bearings
Replacing wheel bearing
At failure of wheel bearings it is not recommended to carry out repairs. Replacing the wheel bearings should be entrusted to a professional. If you decide to assemble the part on your own, you will need:
Set the support under the wheels, on which you will work.
Raise the car using a jack on the side where the part is replaced.
Remove the wheel, brake caliper and disc.
Unscrew the bolts of the hub and take it apart.
Remove the part, examine the seat.
Install a new bearing, grease-lubricate it.
Assemble the system by following the steps in reverse order, mount the wheel.
Check operability.
How to Check for a Bad Wheel Hub Bearing:
When you rotate the wheel by hand and experience noise or roughness, it can be an indicator for bad wheel bearing.
Also check the temperate of the hub after 10-15 minutes of drive. The hub portion should be barely warm. If the hub is warm, it can be an indication for bad wheel bearing.
If you have a play (The wiggle room) in your wheel, it can also be an indicator for bad wheel hub bearing.
Wheel bearings need periodic checking - and adjusting if necessary - usually at 12,000 mile service intervals.
At longer intervals - usually of 36,000 miles - they need repacking with grease.
Bearings on the front wheels of rear-wheel-drive cars and the rear wheels of front-wheel-drive cars are of broadly similar design.
However, driven front wheels and driven rear wheels on cars with independent suspension generally have their hub nuts tightened to a high torque setting, and quite often no routine servicing adjustment is specified.
Adjusting non-driven wheel hub bearings
The bearing is adjusted by tightening the hub nut if it is too loose, or loosening the nut if it is too tight. It should be done with the wheel on and raised on an axle stand.
