Roller bandages are made from lightweight cotton, crepe or elasticised crepe, depending on the pressure to be achieved. A lightweight cotton bandage is used to hold a dressing in place, whereas a crepe or elasticised crepe bandage is used for applying support or firm pressure to a soft tissue injury.
Use
The pad is applied directly onto an open wound and then the bandage is rolled to keep it in place. There is no need to apply a separate dressing first.
• hold a dressing in place on a wound
• maintain pressure over a bulky pad to control bleeding
• support an injured limb or joint
• apply pressure to a limb
9 steps for successful use
1. Wrap the patient in the most comfortable position with a bandage. Before starting to use the bandage, fully support the part.
2. Use the "head" of the taut bandage to hold the taut bandage tightly, and then wrap the "tail" around the body part, unfolding no more than a few centimeters at a time.
3. Start with the locked circle to ensure that the starting point of the bandage is firm in every subsequent circle.
4. Work outward from the middle of the body or limbs.
5. Start with the narrowest part under the dressing, and then work upwards.
6. Make sure that each turn covers two-thirds of the previous turn.
7. Completely cover all used dressings and fillers.
8. The end of the bandage turns straight.
9. Secure the bandage with safety pins or tape. Avoid using metal clips because they are less safe and may fall during exercise.
